Castillo de Colomares – a Disney-style castle just outside Malaga
Benalmadena likes to surprise and, although it is much smaller than Malaga, there are many attractions, especially for the youngest.
In addition to the Selwo Marina Dolphinarium and the Teleferico Railway, Benalmadena has yet another treasure, the Castillo de Colomares, which would make a Disney fairy tale proud.
As its name suggests, it is a beautiful castle, or rather a chateau, which, however, has never been the seat of kings. In fact, it is a monument of unprecedented size, designed to honour Christopher Columbus and his discovery of America.
The Castillo was built by the American doctor Esteban Martín y Martín between 1987 and 1994, who decided to pay tribute to the explorer.
It is a true architectural fantasy that, being built in brick, concrete, natural stone, wood and other materials, combines Byzantine, Romanesque, Gothic and Mudejar styles.
Walking around the 1,500-square-metre area, we will discover many hidden symbols from the three cultures present in medieval Spain (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) to the three ships that Columbus sailed on when discovering America. In addition, the attraction features the world’s smallest chapel at just 1.96 square metres, making a permanent mark in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The entire structure is a carefully carved work of art, symbolic of Columbus’ intrepid adventures and discoveries blending beautifully against the backdrop of the Costa del Sol.
